004 Italy - Rome - Ostia Antica

Ancient Ostia (c. 4th century BC - 9th century AD)

May 7, Day 3. 19 miles by train to the harbour city of ancient Rome.

It had a peak population of 100,000 in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. It fell into decline when a new harbour was established on the other side of the river. It was finally abandoned in 849 AD.

Today it is a large archeological site, close to the modern suburb of Ostia. Massive excavations began in 1938. It is a great place to wander the streets and buildings of an ancient Roman ghost town!
