021 Italy - Rome - Ostia Antica

Molino (c. 80-120 AD)
Mill-bakery

In the centre of the building is a large hall, with floors of basalt blocks. Only the northern part seems to have had a roof, carried by two long rows of brick piers. In this area are five kneading-machines (background), made of volcanic stone.

In the south part are eight mills of volcanic stone (center). Timbers were put into the retangular openings and used to turn the top stone against the bottom stone. The grain may have been poured into the mills from an attic.
