034 Italy - Rome - The Colosseum

Anfiteatro Flavio (built 72 - 80 AD)
Flavian Amphitheatre
"The Colosseum"

The Colosseum could hold 50,000 people. The central arena was an oval 287 ft long and 180 ft wide, surrounded by a wall 15 ft high.

The area beneath the arean was called the Hypogeum (meaning underground). The hypogeum had a two-level subterranean network of tunnels and 32 animal pens. It had 80 vertical shafts for quick access to the arena for animals and scenery.

An estimated 700,000 gladiators, criminals, and Christians died in the arena.
