33 IL Nauvoo -- Joseph Smith Grave

In 1844 Joseph Smith and the Council destroyed a newspaper press
owned by a publisher critical of Smith and his followers.

The publisher brought suit in the county seat of Carthage.
When Smith and his brother arrived, they were jailed on other charges.
During the night a mob stormed the jail and killed them.

Fearing that his body would be taken, his widow had Joseph Smith
buried in a secret grave.

The location of the secret grave was forgotten. Recently archeologists
found it and the remains were moved to this location.
